Chapter Six

An enraged roar reverberated through the air.

Every hair on Zac’s body stood on end and he froze. Jared. That was Jared’s roar. He leaped from the barge and sprinted to the one behind.

Please let Lori be okay.

Please let Jared be okay.

If anything happened to them, he didn’t know what he would do.

Jared and Bernard stood on the deck, in front of the door to his quarters. The bear held something long and crinkly in his large hands. Zac staggered to a halt and stared.

Fear slithered over him, cold and vicious, cramping his gut into knots.

Snakeskin.

The bear held a snakeskin. Not one that had been cut from a dead reptile but one that had peeled off a growing one.

Memories of the old ringmaster flooded Zac’s mind. His hypnotizing green eyes forcing Taj to do horrible things. Zac had been protected somewhat as the weaker cat but he’d not been immune to the snake’s cruelty. He’d not failed to see the pleasure in the ringmaster’s eyes when he’d forced him to stand shirtless in the icy rain until the pain in his shoulder made him want to scream at the slightest touch.

He’d heard what the ringmaster had made Taj do to Lori, had seen what he’d done to Jared. Even Bernard hadn’t escaped the man’s wrath.

If ever there was a type of shifter that would find instant death from stepping foot on one of the circus barges, it was a snake. They were a vile, horrible species. It was the only thing he and Bernard agreed about.

Zac took a deep breath. The old ringmaster was dead.

So, who did the skin belong to?

“Is Lori … Is she okay?” Zac wasn’t sure he wanted to know if she wasn’t.

“She’s fine. She’s safe.”

As if she’d heard him talk about her, Lori’s voice yelled through the door.

“Let me out of here, Jared. Right now.”

“No. You’re safer in there.”

“Oh, for goodness sake. I’m not helpless, you know. What the hell is the problem?” Her voice took the warning tone that someone was about to be given an earful of abuse.

Jared stepped over to the door and leaned his head against it.

“We found a snakeskin.”

“Good, I need some new boots.”

“From a live snake, a large one.” Silence greeted Jared’s explanation. “Honey? Are you okay?”

“Um. Yeah. But I don’t see why I need to be locked in here.”

“Because I need to know you’re safe. I need to be able to concentrate on hunting the snake and I don’t want to risk you or our child.”

“I understand, hon … but hurry up. I need to know you’re safe too.”

Zac tried to look everywhere except at Jared, wanting to give them some privacy.

Until Jared returned to the center of the deck.

“To me. Everyone to me.” His voice rang out loud and clear. Within moments the entire circus was standing on the shore next to the barge.

“Our engines have been sabotaged. We’re stuck here until Bernard can return with spare parts.”

Grumbling rose from the gathered crowd.

“We believe the one responsible is also the owner of this.
